Kanpur stands as one of North India’s major industrial centers with its own historical, religious and commercial importance. Believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi, Kanpur was originally known as `Kanhapur’.

At present it is rightly called as the industrial Capital of U.P. having the headquarters of many important State Government Departments, such as; Directorate of Industries, State Financial Corporation, U.P.S.I.D.C., U.P. Stock Exchange, Handloom Development Directorate and Directorate of Labor connected with the industrial development of the State

Kanpur is the biggest city of the state and is main center of commercial and industrial activities. Kanpur City formerly known as Manchester of the country is now also called the commercial capital of the state. As the industrial base of Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur has a large number of factories within the city limits. The most important are its cotton mills which are the main cotton producing centre in the state with four major factories; the city is also famous for leather factories and leather products.

The rapid industrialization of the city also has led to the huge influx of labor force in search of livelihood from neighboring districts and states; this has again contributed to the rapid growth of population in the city as well as in the slum. Child Labour, Poverty, Illiteracy, Unawareness of their basic rights, Unhygienic environment are some of the biggest issues in the slums of Kanpur, Shrasti Samajik Sansthan had taken a forward step to create awareness on different issues and make them aware of their rights so that they can advocate for themselves and improve their skills through Vocational training so that they will be able to earn enough money to enhance their quality of life in the slum, and so it will be a big challenge for Shristi Samajik Sansthan. The slum dwellers live in a very pathetic condition they are very poor and they do not have enough money to sustain their livelihood so the parents sends the children for rag picking and other work so that they can earn some money for their food. The community is also uneducated on the importance of education. The parents generally lack interest and even the children don’t like to go to the Government School where they are not treated properly or not given proper education apart from that there are various other reasons for the poor enrolment in the schools.

Shrasti Sanajik Sansthan had decided to start awareness program in all the slums of the Kanpur giving special attention to the slums of Kanpur Nagar. In this regards the organization will be coordinating with the Govt. Child Labour Department and Likeminded NGOs and Local and political leaders to aware on the prevailing issues in the slums.

Kanpur is situated on the bank of river Ganges and has been an important place in the history of modern India.
